Garth Tander is optimistic that the V8 Supercars Championship Series will return to West Australia next year.
On the weekend that the V8 Supercars should have been racing at Barbagallo Raceway before the event was withdrawn, the Perth-born driver told Channel 7’s WA news last night that behind-the-scenes work is continuing on getting the category back to west side of the country.
“V8 Supercars has realised that perhaps they’ve missed an opportunity this year in West Australia and they’re working hard in the background with the WA government to ensure that Supercars return next year,” he said.
“If you speak to everyone, they would say they enjoy the circuit, they enjoy coming to West Australia, it’s a key market to a lot of our sponsors and we’ve got a huge supporter base.
“Certainly there needs to be a lot of work done at Barbagallo Raceway, but there’s no worries about the drivers enjoying coming over here.”
The Barbagallo Raceway round was taken off the calendar in February this year after a dispute between the West Australian Sporting Car Club and V8 Supercars could not be resolved.
Toll Holden Racing Team drivers Garth Tander and Will Davison, as well as TeamVodafone and Ford Performance Racing are conducting various activities in Perth over the next week to give WA V8 fans some form of racing fix.
